CRONIES: THEY’RE CONNECTED. NASA admits to subsidizing jet fuel for Google executives.

Last September, NBC Bay Area examined seven years of fuel records from 2007 through 2013. According to those records, NASA sold to H2-11 discounted jet fuel that was then used to fly a private 757, a 767 and 5 other luxury aircraft all over the world. H2-11’s principle owners are the same as Google’s: Sergey Brin, Larry Page and Eric Schmidt.

According to the fuel records, H2-11 purchased jet fuel for prices ranging from $2.37 to $3.20 a gallon. At nearby local airports, the exact same jet fuel goes for between $5 and $8.50 per gallon.

According to the inspector general’s report, the discount fuel saved Google’s principals between $3.3 million and $5.3 million since H2-11 was able to purchase the taxpayer subsidized fuel at Ames.

EUGENE VOLOKH: What would Salon think of an article called, ‘Why I can’t stand Asian musicians who play Beethoven’?

From Salon comes an article called “Why I can’t stand white belly dancers,” with the subtitle “Whether they know it or not, white women who practice belly dance are engaging in appropriation.” . . .

Appropriation — the horror! People treating artistic genres as if they were great ideas that are part of the common stock of humanity, available for all humanity to use, rather than the exclusive property of some particular race or ethnic group. What atrocity will the culturally insensitive appropriators think of next? East Asian cellists? Swedish chess players? The Japanese putting on Shakespeare? . . .

Maybe telling people that they can’t work in some field because they have the wrong color or ancestry would be … rats, I don’t know what to call it. If only there were an adjective that could be used to mean “telling people that they mustn’t do something, because of their race or ethnic origin.”

It usually takes an accompanying blow to the head. And in about half to two-thirds of the 200 or so SBS cases prosecuted each year in the U.S., there are no outward signs of physical injury. Indeed, this is the reason SBS is such a convenient diagnosis. It allows prosecutors to charge a suspected abuser despite no outward signs of abuse. But we now know that other causes can produce these symptoms, which means that some percentage of the people convicted in SBS cases are going to prison for murders that may have never happened.”

JENNIFER LAHL: “Legislative battles are heating up across the United States on the issues of surrogacy contracts and the regulation of assisted reproduction.”

On January 27, the Kansas State Senate Committee on Public Health and Welfare conducted hearings on proposed legislation that would make surrogate parent contracts void and unenforceable in the state. . . .

Woman after woman testified to being pro-life, married to a devout Catholic, or serving on her church board, all attempting to build up a religious ethos in support of surrogacy. One surrogate stated, “It’s an honor to share my body.” Another described how, as a nineteen-year-old single mother who “wanted a better life” for herself and her child, she completed a total of four surrogate pregnancies; the supplemental income from surrogacy allowed her to go back to school. These women talked about “the blessings of surrogacy” and “the gifts of God,” about being able to bring children into their homes through surrogacy and how the surrogate women were “angels” giving “the greatest gift of life.” . . .

In New York state, which currently does not permit paying surrogates, advocates for gay rights are fighting to lift that ban. In the District of Columbia, where the Surrogacy Parenting Agreement Act of 2013 has been introduced by gay council member David Catania, gay men with surrogate-born children testified. In Louisiana and Kansas, by contrast, LGBT advocates played a considerably more “behind the scenes” role. A state senator in Kansas thanked Kansas Equality Coalition for finding witnesses, but notably Kansas Equality Coalition representatives themselves did not provide any testimony.

UNSURPRISING: Cuba Manipulating Health Care Statistics.

Dr. Rodolfo Stusser, former adviser to the Cuban Ministry of Public Health, said in an email that the ministry has contrived its health data since Fidel Castro’s 1959 revolution.

Stusser conducted his own personal research on Cuba’s health care system since 1800, but has been unable to review more data in recent years. Officials at Cuba’s Health Statistics Bureau told him in 2009 that old archives had been lost in a fire.

Stusser presented research [PDF] last year to the Association for the Study of the Cuban Economy (ASCE) showing that declining infant and gross mortality rates predated Castro’s takeover. However, health care successes in Cuba’s colonial and republican eras “have been systematically erased or distorted,” he said in the report. . . .

Doctors in Cuba’s public health system are pressured to induce abortions for potentially problematic pregnancies in order to artificially lower the infant mortality rate. Stusser estimated that if the deaths of living fetuses older than 21 weeks had been reported, Cuba’s infant mortality rate would be at least 50 percent higher.

DALROCK: The wake-up call.

Because submission to a failing husband is something we find difficult to accept, modern Christians have substituted the exact opposite in its place. . . .

In the new narrative (the one which replaces Scripture), what is required to fix the husband is for the wife not to submit but to give him a wake-up call. Joel and Kathy Davisson are the most overt with this message, going so far as to directly advocate that the wife first threaten and then if needed carry through with divorce to lower the boom on the unresponsive husband. However, the much more common narrative is more subtle. Whatever sinful action the wife takes to give her husband the wake-up call typically isn’t overtly sanctioned, but it is consistently presented as the required catalyst to change both the man and the marriage. Because of this, we end up with a celebration of the outcome of the wife’s sin while either ignoring, minimizing, or paying lip service to the sin itself.

From the comments: “The problem with all of these scenarios is that the wife’s best interests are still these male pastor’s and counselor’s priority. So insaturated has the feminine imperative become for the modern church that even the men, calling other ‘failing’ men to Man-Up and do what she says, have no other mental model to work from. There literally is no other concept than feminine-primacy for them to consider.”

PAUL RAHE: No-Fault Divorce and Prenuptial Agreements.

No-fault divorce had its origins in the early 1950s in Oklahoma —”the buckle on the Bible belt” — and its chief advocates were Baptist ministers who feared that making divorce awkward and difficult would promote that worst of all evils — drum roll, please: fornication.

What resulted was a system of serial civil monogamy. When I left Oklahoma for Hillsdale seven years ago, Oklahoma ranked first in the nation in divorce — not because Oklahomans were especially given to fornication and adultery, but because they were especially given to what we now mistakenly think of as marriage. Those who merely shack up never end up in divorce court.

“To those who seek to better the world through the understanding of God’s physical laws and innovation of practical solutions,” the plaque was to read. “In honor of Dr. William ‘Ed’ and Glenda McCracken.”

Last October, university officials informed McCracken that it would not be utilizing the submitted language as they wished to avoid the appearance of promoting religion.

NEWS YOU CAN USE: Why Breastfed Babies Are So Smart.

Researchers at Brigham Young University examined data from 7,500 mothers and children collected from birth to four years of age. They found that two crucial parenting skills were responsible for the boost to cognition. Mothers who breastfed were more likely to:

  • respond to children’s emotional cues,
  • and read to children at 9 months of age.

Together these factors were enough to put children two or three months ahead when they reached four-years-old. . . .

None of this means that breastfeeding doesn’t confer other advantages, it does: for example, breast milk has considerable health benefits. The suggestion is that breastfeeding doesn’t directly affect IQ, rather it is reading to their children and the high emotional responsiveness of mothers which boosts intellectual development.

BAIT AND SWITCH: My Brother’s Keeper.

Obama is lying again. The My Brother’s Keeper initiative is not actually going to help any young black people. It will help him. He has already used it to extract 200 million in pledges from business and foundations. The Presidents goal? To create a committee to assess what government anti-poverty approaches work. They will then create a computer portal to help poor blacks access government money. Yes, a computer portal. Can you feel the hope?

Conservatives accept the reality that the only way to combat life’s unfairness is to strengthen personal responsibility. The work ethic, education and sacrificing for your children is the sure way that people in this country have progressed. Destroy the motivation to be responsible, to work hard and live clean, and you have destroyed a person. Despite all the good intentions in the world, no anti-poverty program has decreased poverty. What it does achieve is that American poverty is bought and paid for by Democrats, and the payoff is a 90% voting block worthy of Stalinist Russia.

JIM GOAD on freedom of association.

I was reminded of a 2008 case in New Jersey involving one Heath Campbell, a self-described Nazi festooned in swastika tattoos. The case involved not a wedding cake, but rather a birthday cake for his three-year-old son, cuddly little Adolf Hitler Campbell. A worker at a ShopRite supermarket refused to squeeze out the words “Adolf Hitler” onto the cake in sugared frosting, leading Campbell to get his Hitler birthday cake at a local Walmart, which subsequently promised to review its “cake policy.” . . .

I don’t see any difference in refusing to bake a cake for a Nazi or a turd-tapper. It should be the baker’s decision alone. And religious convictions shouldn’t be the sole criterion. You should be able to refuse service to anyone merely because you don’t like their face or the way they smell. You should be able to tell them to get lost merely because you’re in a bad mood. . . .

From the Civil Rights movements of the 1960s up to the ceaseless modern minoritarian onslaughts against the unwilling, the principle of “freedom of association” has been fairly stomped to death. Freedom of association involves the consent of both parties, because forcing someone to schmooze with someone with whom they have zero desire to engage is not freedom—it’s coercion.

NEWS YOU CAN USE: Have a song stuck in your head? Here’s how to get rid of it. “The vast majority of people experience involuntary musical imagery (INMI) or ‘earworms’; perceptions of spontaneous, repetitive musical sound in the absence of an external source. . . . The most popular and effective behaviours in response to INMI were seeking out the tune in question, and musical or verbal distraction.” Wait. Did we need scientists to tell us that?

TAKE THAT, PATRIARCHY: Oral contraceptives linked to increased risk of multiple sclerosis.

Utilizing membership data from Kaiser Permanente Southern California, researchers analyzed the health records of 305 women aged 14 to 48 who were diagnosed with MS or its precursor, clinically isolated syndrome (CIS), between 2008 and 2011. They looked at the women’s birth control use up to three years prior to the onset of MS symptoms.

Overall, researchers found a 30 percent increased risk of developing MS amongst women who had at least three months of oral contraceptive use, compared to a control group of 3,050 women who did not have MS. They found that 29.2 percent of women with MS used birth control before their diagnoses, while 23 percent of women in the healthy control group used birth control– showing an increased risk with higher use of the drug.

There might not be any causal relationship, and a thirty percent increase of a small number is still a small number, but replace “oral contraceptives” with “cell phones” and the press would be all over this.

Laura Wood comments, “We’re supposed to believe that interfering with the complex hormonal system of women is progress. It never ceases to amaze how the enlightened promote the use of oral contraceptives while insisting on pesticide-free broccoli.”

HAVING IT ALL: Fast track to femininity: Why competing with men has left women out of touch with their feminine side.

These days, as a single parent and sole breadwinner, I often feel more masculine than feminine. Working full-time, making every decision, paying every bill, driving myself everywhere, booking tickets for holidays, lugging the Christmas tree in – it’s all completely de-feminising. My friend Sophie, 46, who runs her own design company and is a single mother to two boys aged nine and 11, agrees. She has been single for six years, since her husband left her for another woman. Blonde, attractive and kind, she hasn’t been on a date since he walked out. ‘I have absolutely no idea how to be a woman any more,’ she says. ‘Because I run my business, my home and make all the decisions about the boys, I feel totally unfeminine. ‘I’m terrified of dating as I have no idea how to behave.

‘I would love a partner but I feel unattractive, untrusting, unsexy and completely alone.’ That, of course, is the crux for many of us.

We honestly believed that if we worked hard, we could have it all and more. Yet so many of us have ended up lonely, exhausted and broken-hearted, with far less of what we bargained for.

SNEAK PEEK AT THE NEXT ELECTORAL NARRATIVE: Biden: ‘Single Women With Children in a Dead-End Job’ Can Quit Because of Obamacare.

In a chat with the ladies of “The View” on Tuesday, Vice President Biden said Obamacare “gives women a great deal more freedom.”

“How many of you are single women with children, in a dead-end job?” Biden asked. “You’re there because of your health insurance. You would rather have the opportunity to spend the next couple of years with your child until they get — if that was your choice — until they get into primary school.

“You’re now trapped in that job because if you leave, you lose your health insurance. Now you’ll be able to do — make an independent choice. Do you want to stay in that job and still have health insurance, or do you want to — I mean, do you want to stay in that job, even though you can get health insurance absent that job? And it gives women a great deal more freedom.”

Biden called Obamacare a “life-changing” experience that gives people “peace of mind.”

A LETTER to an organizer of the White Privilege Conference.

Dear Abby, . . .

Your White Privilege Conference inspired me to launch the logical – and morally necessary – offshoot to the White Privilege Conference. The particulars of your Privileged background make you eminently qualified to be the keynote speaker. So I hope you’ll join me at that upcoming Social Justice activism extravaganza that will henceforth be known as the Jewish Privilege Conference. . . .

If you deny Jewish Privilege, then you open the door for Racists to offer genetic explanations for why Jews excel. Of course, Social Justice requires that all populations be innately the same as Ashkenazi Jews. There can be no genetic differences between ethnic groups. . . .

All cultures are equal, but some are more Privileged than others. Jews are only 0.2% of the world population and therefore should be only 0.2% of Nobel laureates. Instead, Jews are 22% of all Nobel Prize winners. In Physics, Chemistry, Medicine and Economics, Muslims hold just two Nobel Prizes. Jews hold 158.

It’s not merit. It’s not luck. It’s Privilege. The Nobel Committee Privileges Jewish science and Jewish logic and marginalizes People of Muhammed. . . .

Some of your fellow White Privilege indoctrination specialists have demanded that white people wear White Privilege wrist bands in order to make their Privilege more visible. . . .

I think what you can do to help raise awareness about Jewish Privilege is to wear a yellow Star of David.

JONAH GOLDBERG: “Diversity means conformity.”

“What really bothered me is, the whole idea is that at a liberal arts college, we need to be hearing a diversity of opinion,” Ching told the Daily Gazette, the school’s newspaper. “I don’t think we should be tolerating [George’s] conservative views because that dominant culture embeds these deep inequalities in our society.”

Swarthmore must be so proud.

Over at Harvard, another young lady has similar views. Harvard Crimson editorial writer Sandra Y.L. Korn recently called for getting rid of academic freedom in favor of something called “academic justice.” . . .

“When an academic community observes research promoting or justifying oppression, it should ensure that this research does not continue.

Everyone draws the line somewhere as to what constitutes acceptable discourse. Being honest about that line is a good first step to questioning it.

Libertarians, instead of slavishly going to bat for homosexual activists, should keep in mind that homosexual activists like big government. They should listen to Walter Block when he points out that homosexual activists aren’t libertarian, instead of scrubbing his crimethink from the internet.

At the same time, conservatives should support freedom of association, not merely “religious liberty.” And they should support it for everyone, not just for religious people. As Ed Whelan writes, “The libertarian case for a broad scaling back of antidiscrimination laws—yes, possibly including a wholesale repeal of protections for religious persons against being discriminated against on religious grounds—is compelling.”

MICHELLE MALKIN: When Will America End Cash-for-Visas Racket?

Who has profited? As I’ve reported previously, the real winners are former federal immigration officials who formed lucrative limited partnerships to cash in on their access and politically connected cronies. An internal U.S. Justice Department investigative report revealed years ago that “aliens were paying $125K” instead of the required $500,000 to $1 million minimum, and “almost all of the monies went to the general partners and the companies who set up the limited partners.”

Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla., has been pressing EB-5 middlemen who operate a network of regional centers to cough up data on how many jobs these immigrant investor schemes are creating, lists of current and former corporate officers at the centers, and details of consulting services and other contracts into which the centers have entered. ROBERT MURPHY: Can’t Make ObamaCare Without Breaking Some Households.

Krugman wants to know how the healthcare.gov fiasco is affecting estimates of how many uninsured people won’t be able to get coverage. The answer is, one million people. To Krugman, that’s just a mild set back, so trivial that it prompts a sarcastic “oh noes” of mock disappointment.

These million people are allegedly the ones Krugman cares so much about, that he’s willing to overturn millions of others people’s health insurance, not to mention imposing hundreds of billions in new taxes on “the rich.” In Krugman’s vision of the world, the fact that the Obama Administration couldn’t get its website running means a million people will have, at best, delayed medical care. Given that that’s how he officially claims to be looking at this, his reaction is rather shocking. It leads one to wonder how this is really about helping actual human beings, versus achieving political goals that will help “the disadvantaged” in the abstract.

AMONG PUBLISHED CLIMATE SCIENTISTS, 1.6%, Not 97%, Agree that Humans are the Main Cause of Global Warming.

Mark Bahner, a commenter on my previous post on global warming and on David Friedman’s post, has sifted through the data behind John Cook’s statement that 97% of climate scientists who stated a position believe that humans are the main cause of global warming. Recall that Bedford and Cook lumped together those who believe that humans are the main cause with those who believe that humans are a cause. . . .

Fortunately, Mark Bahner, an enterprising commenter on both David Friedman’s and my posts, managed to find their data and went through and did his own calculation. He reported his results in a comment on my previous post . . .

According to Bahner (and I have not gone through and checked the raw data for myself), of the 11,944 abstracts that Cook et al examined, only 64 claimed explicitly that humans are the main cause of global warming.

THERE’S HOPE YET, because there are some women who encourage other women to drop feminism and take up femininity.

Dealing as I do on a daily basis with a lot of young women at RedPillWomen subreddit, you really get a feel for the minds of girls today. . . .

Let’s talk about the new girls. Most of these girls are young, anywhere from late teens to mid-twenties. They have completely unrealistic expectations of their futures. They are determined to have it all. They all have their timelines of what-happens-when thoroughly structured in their minds. . . .

The problem with their timelines is that the husband doesn’t enter the picture until the woman is in her late twenties. After grad school, is “Find Husband” and then “Have Kids”. Of course the husband has to be able to support a family of five. And he’s going to magically appear at the right time, and he’s going to want someone approaching their thirties, and he’s going to want kids right away, etc and so on. . . .

So, this is the new generation of women. This is what we are dealing with at RPW. We have to break through their Princess shell, smash their timeline and crumple their dreams before they will listen to us. We have to tear them down before we can rebuild them. We have to destroy their feminism and replace it with femininity.

SHOULD BE INTERESTING: Tickets for International Conference on Men’s Issues Now on Sale.

INTERESTING IF TRUE: Women led the opposition to the women’s suffrage movement. Were men behind it?

Given how unhappy, overworked and barren women are today, should it really come as a surprise that the leading voices AGAINST suffrage were women?

I once penned that an honest examination of the women’s suffrage moment would find MEN behind it. Get that Susan B. Anthony Cady Stanton Pocahantas the Riveter stuff outta here. It is MEN who wanted gullible women voting them free stuff from the state’s coffers. A few men at the top funding a movement that would bring them personal benefit, dragging mostly disinterested traditional middle class women along with them. So who exactly benefitted is the question. Cui bono?

It might sound like a strange theory. That said, a sober history of feminism has yet to be written.

SCIENCE: Publishers remove gibberish computer-generated research papers.

Computer scientist Cyril Labbé of Joseph Fourier University in Grenoble, France, spent two years examining published research papers, and found that computer-generated papers made it into more than 30 conferences, and over 120 have been published by academic publishing houses — over 100 by the the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) and 16 by Springer.

The papers were generated by a piece of free software called SCIgen, developed in 2005 by scientists at MIT. SCIgen randomly generates nonsense papers, complete with graphs, diagrams and citations, and its purpose was to demonstrate how easily conferences accept meaningless submissions. . . .

Both publishing houses have pulled the papers in question, although some issues remain. Ruth Springer, UK head of communications for Springer, is running into issues trying to contact the authors, and noted that the conferences in question were, in fact, peer reviewed, which casts a bad light on the current processes. IEEE, however, declined to comment.

NOT THAT THERE’S ANYTHING WRONG WITH THAT: How Homosexual Athletes Are Ruining Sports.

Realistically, it should have just been another day in the life of a mediocre, bench-warming NBA player.  Instead, Collins’ debuts made the headlines of just about every major media outlet, and he even impressed the president of the United States with his outstanding courage.  Courage for what, you say?

Being a homosexual.

Yeah, what a real hero.  Do you think Obama gives a personal call to all soldiers who demonstrate bravery on the battlefield?  I doubt it. . . .

Gay rights activists want homosexuality to be viewed not only as acceptable, but natural.  They want to push gay propaganda on to children, and they will throw fits if they are not allowed to do so.  They are supporting athletes like Collins and Sam simply because of the publicity it brings to their movement.  It used to be that homosexuals wanted to be able to come out to their families and close friends.  Fair enough.  Then, they wanted the same rights as married male/female relationships.  They have been successful in getting those rights as well.  However, it’s still not enough.

No longer is it enough for homosexuals to be given equal opportunity and not be hated.  No, now they want to poison the entire nation, and that starts by hitting the sectors of culture that have been dominated by the masculine up to this point.
