HYSTERICAL: Woman who consented to sex claims she was ‘raped by rape culture’.
A female college student recounts an incident where she found herself in a man’s dorm room after a party. He asked, “is this ok?” — meaning, was she okay with having sex. She admits that she said “yes” and that there wasn’t any coercion or imminent threat of violence, and “not a lot” of inebriation.
But now she says she secretly didn’t want to have sex . . .
You read that right: “raped by rape culture.” It’s a term coined by the young woman and her friends to describe the purported experience where a woman’s agreement to have sex is “coerced by the culture that had raised us and the systems of power that worked on us . . . .”
If you think that makes no sense, just wait, she’s not finished. “Consent is a privilege, and it was built for wealthy, heterosexual, cis, white, western, able-bodied masculinity,” she posits. . . .
A couple of comments beneath the article did nail it. One guy wrote: “There’s a fella out there for you: Mongo the Mind-Reader.” Another reader explained: “Modern feminism has taught generations of young women (and young men) that . . . women should ’embrace’ their sexuality and have casual sex with as many partners as they like, without any consequences. . . . . Who taught you to say yes? It wasn’t some wealthy, heterosexual, cis, white, western, able-bodied boogeyman. It was the very movement you now align yourself with who ‘coerced’ you into believing that ‘hookups are supposed to be fun.'”

Yes, those processes were “hijack[ed]” from their intended purpose, which is to punish heterosexual men.

DECLINE AND FALL OF THE FDNY: Woman to become NY fireman despite failing crucial fitness test.
The FDNY for the first time in its history will allow someone who failed its crucial physical fitness test to join the Bravest, The Post has learned.
Rebecca Wax, 33, is set to graduate Tuesday from the Fire Academy without passing the Functional Skills Training test, a grueling obstacle course of job-related tasks performed in full gear with a limited air supply, an insider has revealed.
“They’re going to allow the first person to graduate without passing because this administration has lowered the standard,” said the insider, who is familiar with the training.
Upon graduation, Wax would be assigned to a firehouse and tasked with the full duties of a firefighter.
Some FDNY members are angry.
“We’re being asked to go into a fire with someone who isn’t 100 percent qualified,” the source said. “Our job is a team effort. If there’s a weak link in the chain, either civilians or our members can die.”

IN CASE YOU DIDN’T ALREADY KNOW THAT the Southern Poverty Law Center is a joke:
He said that, really, the SPLC only tracks those who commit violence or who seek to destroy whole systems in the name of an ideology.
“Isn’t that exactly what happened in Cleveland?” I asked. “These five men, all linked with Occupy Wall Street, attempted to blow up a bridge as an overture to the wholesale destruction of Cleveland, Ohio, and in the name of anarchism. They also looked to blow up the Republican convention.”
“They were anarchists,” he repeated.
“Yes?”
He paused. “We’re not really set up to cover the extreme Left.”
“PRIVILEGE” ON STEROIDS: Is having a loving family an unfair advantage?
The power of the family to tilt equality hasn’t gone unnoticed, and academics and public commentators have been blowing the whistle for some time. Now, philosophers Adam Swift and Harry Brighouse have felt compelled to conduct a cool reassessment. . . .
‘What we realised we needed was a way of thinking about what it was we wanted to allow parents to do for their children, and what it was that we didn’t need to allow parents to do for their children, if allowing those activities would create unfairnesses for other people’s children’.
The test they devised was based on what they term ‘familial relationship goods’; those unique and identifiable things that arise within the family unit and contribute to the flourishing of family members.
For Swift, there’s one particular choice that fails the test.
‘Private schooling cannot be justified by appeal to these familial relationship goods,’ he says. ‘It’s just not the case that in order for a family to realise these intimate, loving, authoritative, affectionate, love-based relationships you need to be able to send your child to an elite private school.’
In contrast, reading stories at bedtime, argues Swift, gives rise to acceptable familial relationship goods, even though this also bestows advantage. . . .
‘You have to allow parents to engage in bedtime stories activities, in fact we encourage them because those are the kinds of interactions between parents and children that do indeed foster and produce these [desired] familial relationship goods.’

STICK TO THE SCIENCE, BUDDY: Ancient DNA Tells a New Human Story. This is for the most part an interesting article about relatively recent human evolution. But the social and political commentary, although it takes up very little space, is rather annoying.
From near the beginning of the article:
It turns out that, in the prehistory of our species, almost all of us were invaders and usurpers and miscegenators. This scientific revelation is interesting in its own right, but it may have the added benefit of encouraging people today to worry a bit less about cultural change, racial mixing and immigration.
Non sequitur, anyone? Don’t worry about invaders and usurpers today, because there were a lot in the past — just like there were a lot of murderers, thieves, and rapists.
And again, at the end of the article:
The lessons of this DNA revolution are not just scientific, however; they are social and political as well. The discoveries made possible by our new access to ancient DNA show that very few people today live anywhere near where their distant ancestors lived. Virtually no one on the planet is a true native—an instructive fact to consider at a time when ethnic and national differences still abound and the world continues to throw human beings together in new and unexpected ways.
So, the new findings are supposed to justify today’s mass immigration through open borders. Does it also justify yesterday’s colonialism and imperialism? If we were to find that genocide has been common, would that justify it now?
DELICATE FLOWERS: Ovid’s Metamorphoses triggers students at Columbia. “Ovid’s ‘Metamorphoses’ is a fixture of Lit Hum, but like so many texts in the Western canon, it contains triggering and offensive material that marginalizes student identities in the classroom. These texts, wrought with histories and narratives of exclusion and oppression, can be difficult to read and discuss as a survivor, a person of color, or a student from a low-income background.”
Note that the authors of this opinion piece are four (!) women. Maybe they, and everyone else concerned by the “triggering” Western canon, should just stay home and let the big boys go to college to read such dangerous texts.

INTERESTING: Research unlocks critical early nutrient supply for embryos.
The scientists discovered that gland cells in the lining of the uterus store glucose in the form of glycogen. This is then delivered to the placenta together with glycoproteins to be used for energy and converted into the amino acids which are the building blocks for further growth of the embryo.
Once a direct blood supply from the mother’s circulation to the placenta is established after 11 weeks, the supply from the gland cells tails off. . . .
An earlier study of Dutch women who were in the first three months of pregnancy at the time of a famine at the end of World War Two showed that their children were more susceptible to diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular disease and other health problems than those who had enjoyed the good diet to which the people of Holland usually have access.
The new study explains some of how this crucial stage of development operates, suggesting not just that a healthy diet during the first 11 weeks of pregnancy is essential, but that as nutrients are stored in the gland cells before pregnancy, it is also important to get this right before conception.

THE CULT of Nice. “I gave up being nice when I saw it was futile. Being nice didn’t get me more or better friends. Being nice just brought more people into my life who were willing to take advantage of me. Being nice didn’t improve the quality of my life. Being nice did nothing for me spiritually. That said, I strive to be merciful, gracious, grateful, humble, and helpful—which I can do without being nice.”
DALROCK: According to the government, fathers don’t matter.
While HHS says any man currently shacking up with mom counts as the father, the Census says any man currently shacking up with mom counts as the father so long as mom says so. Either way, fathers clearly can’t matter that much to the US government if distinguishing between the actual father and the man currently banging mom isn’t important.
There are other ways we can tell that fathers don’t matter (and therefore Black fathers don’t matter). Under our current family system fathers are a sort of deputy parent. Just like a sheriff’s deputy serves at the pleasure of the sheriff, a father in an intact family serves at the pleasure of the mother. Our entire family court structure is designed to facilitate the removal of the father should the mother decide she no longer wants him to be part of the family unit. How important can fathers really be, when we have a massive and brutal bureaucracy devoted to helping mothers kick them out of the house?
SAFE, LEGAL, RARE: Abortion Clinic That Killed Four Women in Botched Abortions Loses License [not really], Fined $50,000.
Together with the January fine, the Albany FPA [Family Planning Associates] abortion facility now owes the State of Illinois a total of $50,000 in fines.
IDPH [Illinois Department of Public Health] also revoked Albany’s ASTC [ambulatory surgical treatment center] license, but the revocation has been stayed pending the outcome of a hearing that has yet to be scheduled—this despite the fact that Family Planning Associates has repeatedly shown that they never intended to fix any of the major problems at the Albany abortion clinic.

UPDATE 2: Here’s a translation:
Why do many – also among the baptized – have little trust in marriage and the family? It is important to try to understand, if we want young people to be able to find the right way to follow. Why don’t they have confidence in the family?
The difficulties are not only of an economic character, although these are truly serious. Many hold that the change that has happened in these last decades has to do with the emancipation of woman. However, this argument is not valid either; it is a falsehood, it’s not true! It is a form of machismo that always wants to dominate woman. . . .
The Christian seed of the radical equality between spouses must bear new fruits today. The testimony of the social dignity of marriage will become persuasive in fact this way, the way of witness that attracts, the way of reciprocity between them, of the complementarity between them.
Therefore, as Christians, we must become more exacting in this regard. For instance: to support with determination the right of equal compensation for equal work, why is it taken for granted that women must earn less than men? No! They have the same rights. The disparity is a pure scandal!
Shut. Up.

DALROCK: Debtors prisons are an essential tool of our new public policy.
These men are being imprisoned . . . to facilitate the destruction of traditional marriage so that a new family structure, one instead based on child support, can take the place of marriage. To understand this, you need to understand the four key objectives which are being achieved by imprisoning so many men.
1) Create the illusion that unwed mothers are not in fact irresponsible welfare queens.
This is crucial to the moral acceptance of unwed motherhood. For our new system to function as desired, single mothers must be absolved of all social stigma. Our new system goes to great lengths to absolve single mothers of stigma, and part of this is removing the stigma of welfare paid to single mothers. . . .
In order to absolve the mothers themselves, we must transfer the entire stigma and responsibility to men. . . .
4) Dis-empower husbands and fathers in order to empower wives and mothers. . . .
Fundamentally, the objective is to create a system where women can become mothers without being beholden to a man. The most obvious incarnations of this involve single motherhood. However, the system is also designed achieve the same goal in a more subtle way, by making husbands powerless for those women who wish to remain nominally married. All of the machinery designed to crush the father and remove him from the home can also be used to change the power dynamics within marriage.

HOW MUCH does breastfeeding really affect IQ?
Even if breastfed babies really do grow up to have higher IQs and make more money, how do we know it’s because they were breastfed? “Breastfeeding is positively associated with socioeconomic standards,” acknowledged Horta, one of the authors of the Brazil study, in a podcast conversation with The Lancet about his work. “So there is always a question of whether [an outcome like higher IQ] is a consequence of breastfeeding by itself… The kids who are breastfed are wealthier.”
In other words, because mothers who breastfeed are also more likely to enjoy a higher socioeconomic status, maybe the breastfed babies have higher IQs and better income in life because of advantages—other than breast milk—associated with that higher socioeconomic status.
And maybe the mothers who breastfed were more likely to enjoy a higher socioeconomic status for the same reason their children had higher IQs and better income in life. Parental IQ correlates with both income and children’s IQ. See Charles Murray’s “Why the SAT Isn’t a ‘Student Affluence Test’” (original link here):
All high-quality academic tests look as if they’re affluence tests. It’s inevitable. Parental IQ is correlated with children’s IQ everywhere. In all advanced societies, income is correlated with IQ. Scores on academic achievement tests are always correlated with the test-takers’ IQ. Those three correlations guarantee that every standardized academic-achievement test shows higher average test scores as parental income increases.
But those correlations also mean that a lot of the apparent income effect is actually owed to parental IQ.
Earlier: Why Breastfed Babies Are So Smart.
WATCH YOUR CALORIES? No. Watch where you get those calories.
According to the Lancet global burden of disease reports, poor diet now generates more disease than physical inactivity, alcohol and smoking combined. Up to 40% of those with a normal body mass index will harbour metabolic abnormalities typically associated with obesity, which include hypertension, dyslipidaemia, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and cardiovascular disease. However, this is little appreciated by scientists, doctors, media writers and policymakers, despite the extensive scientific literature on the vulnerability of all ages and all sizes to lifestyle-related diseases.
Instead, members of the public are drowned by an unhelpful message about maintaining a ‘healthy weight’ through calorie counting, and many still wrongly believe that obesity is entirely due to lack of exercise. . . .
Coca Cola, who spent $3.3 billion on advertising in 2013, pushes a message that ‘all calories count’; they associate their products with sport, suggesting it is ok to consume their drinks as long as you exercise. However science tells us this is misleading and wrong. It is where the calories come from that is crucial. Sugar calories promote fat storage and hunger. Fat calories induce fullness or ‘satiation’.
A large econometric analysis of worldwide sugar availability, revealed that for every excess 150 calories of sugar (say, one can of cola), there was an 11-fold increase in the prevalence of type 2 diabetes, in comparison to an identical 150 calories obtained from fat or protein. And this was independent of the person’s weight and physical activity level.

In other words, if Nungesser had said some of these things during an interview with a reporter — e.g., that Sulkowicz contracted chlamydia after she had sex with two guys at a party [PDF] — maybe she could have sued him for defamation. And if he had named her as a defendant, they could have fought it out in court. As it is, all this negative stuff about her is now a matter of public record: “Nungesser said X, Y and Z,” and there isn’t a damned thing she can do to prevent anyone from quoting it.
SOUTH AFRICA: Tim Noakes Stands By Low-Carb, High-Fat Diet For Children. How is this controversial?
From 1:15 to 1:42 in the audio file at the link:
Tim Noakes: We’re realizing that the infant is a machine designed to turn fat into brain tissue. And you have to provide the child for the first two years of its life with all the nutrients it needs to build its brain. The key nutrient it needs is fat — plus five or six different minerals. And it turns out that an animal-based food provides those nutrients in excess.
From 2:13 to 2:51:
Interviewer Stephen Grootes: As I understand it, breast milk is at least 40% carbohydrate. It could actually be higher. Surely, if you’re weaning a baby off breast milk, you need something that has roughly the same percentage of carbohydrate.
Tim Noakes: Ah, thank you Stephen for asking that question! Because if it’s only got [40%] carbohydrate, what makes up the other 60%? It turns out it’s fat. So breast milk is [mostly] fat. A baby is an animal that has to metabolize fat. It has to be ketotic, because they have to use ketones to build brains. They do not build brains from carbohydrate. They build them from fat.
Breast milk is very high in fat. Newborns spend time in ketosis, and are therefore to some extent ketoadapted. Breast milk is also high in sugar, but babies’ brains are so big they can handle a lot more sugar than us full-grown folks. Being ketoadapted means that babies can more easily turn ketone bodies into acetyl-coA and into myelin. Ketosis helps babies construct and grow their brains. (For those interested in nitty gritty details – babies are in mild ketosis, but very young babies seem to utilize lactate as a fuel in lieu of glucose also – and the utilization of lactate also promotes the same use of acetyl-CoA and gives the neonates some of the advantages of ketoadaptation without being in heavy ketosis.)
Earlier: The Victorians were still cleverer than us, or the road to Idiocracy? “The American Academy of Pediatrics says that restricting fat can harm brain development in children, yet I would bet that many parents, especially from the more educated classes, have been doing just that for the past several decades.”
THUGOCRACY: “John Doe” raids punish Wisconsin families for being politically conservative.
John Doe investigations alter typical criminal procedure in two important ways: First, they remove grand juries from the investigative process, replacing the ordinary citizens of a grand jury with a supervising judge. Second, they can include strict secrecy requirements not just on the prosecution but also on the targets of the investigation. In practice, this means that, while the prosecution cannot make public comments about the investigation, it can take public actions indicating criminal suspicion (such as raiding businesses and homes in full view of the community) while preventing the targets of the raids from defending against or even discussing the prosecution’s claims.
Why would Chisholm seek such broad powers to investigate a year-old embezzlement claim with a known suspect? Because the Milwaukee County executive, Scott Walker, had by that time become the leading Republican candidate for governor. District Attorney Chisholm was a Democrat, a very partisan Democrat.
Almost immediately after opening the John Doe investigation, Chisholm used his expansive powers to embarrass Walker, raiding his county-executive offices within a week. As Mr. O’Keefe and the Wisconsin Club for Growth explained in court filings, the investigation then dramatically expanded.
It becomes useful to hardcore partisans including those in the press to “controversialize” what should be a noncontroversial, nonpartisan issue. No one should be arguing that the VA Scandal is not a scandal.
But Obama needs it to not be a scandal — and thus, his administration pumped out a report claiming that they couldn’t tell who actually died on the waiting list, so that conservatives claiming that people died were liars.
The media ate this report up, of course, and ignored later proof that the report had been ordered to be written that way by Obama flacks.
This then is what I think Sharyl Attkisson meant by “controversializing” an issue. Partisanizing it, making it seem as if there is a Progressive Side and a Conservative Side and the Conservatives are of course liars and even if they’re not, it’s all just a big silly political food-fight anyway, and only an extreme partisan would take sides in a big silly political food-fight.
Therefore, anyone reporting on the VA scandal must himself be an extreme partisan. After all, if it’s just a big political food-fight, who else but partisans would weigh in?
Thus does the media turn all stories about Democrat malfeasance into mere political name-calling squabbles.
WHEN EVERYTHING IS POLITICAL: North Carolina Reporter Editorializes About Father’s Politics in Article on Son’s Suicide. “A married father of two girls commits suicide with a gun in a public place following a domestic dispute, and yet nine paragraphs of a 13 paragraph story are about the political activities of his conservative father that have nothing to do with his son’s suicide.”
HERE WE GO: Marines weigh lower standards for women after none pass Infantry Officer Course.
A IOC diploma is a must to earn the designation of infantry officer. Of 29 women who tried, none graduated . . .
In January 2013, then-Defense Secretary Leon E. Panetta and Gen. Dempsey, the Joint Chiefs chairman, appeared in the Pentagon press room to make a historic announcement. They had lifted the rule that prevented women from serving in direct ground combat, such as infantry, special operations, artillery and armor.
The cancellation began a far-reaching process by each military branch to evaluate female candidates and the standards they must meet. The giant study is scheduled to end in January, when Defense Secretary Ashton Carter will decide which, if not all, occupations will be opened. If a service — the Marine Corps, for example — decides infantry should remain closed, it must prove why its standards cannot be lowered.
Gen. Dempsey laid down the law this way: “If we do decide that a particular standard is so high that a woman couldn’t make it, the burden is now on the service to come back and explain to the secretary, why is it that high? Does it really have to be that high?”

DAVID GEARY, evolutionary psychologist, talks about sex differences and health.
“People talk about cultural factors creating sex differences, I think it’s the other way around, there’s pressure to disconfirm the way people are. Cultural hype tries to make the sexes more alike, this is stressful for boys and girls and men and women,” explained Geary. . . .
When it comes to researching human behavioural sex differences, . . . the hard-wired element frequently causes controversy, much to Geary’s frustration.
“The PC-types have been intimidating and very effective in suppressing dissent. Other academics don’t want the hassle of being called ‘sexist’. People are afraid to speak out! Fortunately, I’ve been blessed with a sufficient amount of social insensitivity not to worry too much.” . . .
Some gender specialists insist theories on sex differences are exaggerated and harmful to women. Professor Alice Eagly, of Northwestern University, declined to contend with Geary’s new hypothesis but commented, “Chronic inequality affects the psychology of women, just as men’s greater status and privilege affect their psychology.”
But life in the womb can’t be socially conditioned and, rhetorically, Geary queried how any amount of societal male privilege could result in making the development of unborn baby boys’ “spatial abilities or play behaviour susceptible to prenatal toxins but leave unaffected those of girls?”
WHOOPS: FBI overstated forensic hair matches in nearly all trials before 2000. “The FBI errors alone do not mean there was not other evidence of a convict’s guilt. Defendants and federal and state prosecutors in 46 states and the District are being notified to determine whether there are grounds for appeals. Four defendants were previously exonerated.”
Yes, in a perfect world it’s possible that these people may end up as model citizens and contribute greatly to the economy. But it’s also possible that in their midst are criminals and violent jihadists, like those lovely Muslim refugees who recently tossed Christians over the side of the ship. And even if you take the optimistic view, where do you stop? Are we simply to accept that it’s now Europe’s job to house every single refugee from Libya and elsewhere that survives the perilous crossing?
Or should we not even be talking about such things? Is the only fair and decent response to shut our eyes and pretend that it’s not happening?

UK: Men are paying for a system that drives thousands of them to suicide.
Suicide is the leading cause of death of British men under 50 years of age. . . .
Disadvantaging of males begins at an early age. Life outcomes for boys deprived of a father active in their lives tend to be poor and the state has long been the architect of the destruction of the nuclear family.
About two-thirds of secondary school teachers are women and state schools are failing large numbers of boys. One in four boys is labelled as having special educational needs. . . .
Huge amounts of taxpayers’ money has been spent over decades ‘encouraging’ women into traditionally male-dominated professions . . .
Taxpayers’ money is not being spent “encouraging” men into female-dominated professions, although male unemployment has long been higher than female unemployment, and unemployment is known to be a major driver of male suicide, but not female suicide.
Two thirds of public sector employees are women, yet the Equality Act 2010 is designed to prioritise females over males in recruitment and promotion terms. . . .
