Monroeville Police Chief K. Douglas Cole told Channel 11 News that there were about 1,000 children and teens in the mall when up to six different fights took place. . . .
“We did see a lot of individuals that were not from the eastern area of the county, which is a little bit different,” said Cole.

There were reports across the country involving similar incidents at malls that same weekend, involving teenagers, teens, juveniles, and even youths:
- Beachwood, Ohio: Post-Christmas teenage brawl at Beachwood Mall ends in arrest, viral video. “One 16-year-old girl reportedly initiated the fight with the four other girls, who are all 15 and 16.”
- Chicago: Food Court Fight Closes Chicago Ridge Mall. “Cell phone video shows a teenager being detained by police at the Chicago Ridge Mall, which shut down early after a fight broke out involving a large group of teenagers.”
- Independence, Missouri: Friday night commotion at Independence Center is followed by quiet Saturday shopping. “Large groups of youths congregated in what police described as an organized ‘flash mob.’ . . . Officers saw 200 to 300 young people pouring out of the building, some kicking doors as they went.”
- Nashville: Fight breaks out in Opry Mills Mall food court. “Metro Police responded to reports of a large fight in the food court of Opry Mills Mall Saturday evening. Police say the disturbance was caused by three juveniles.”
- Sacramento: 2 Teens Arrested After Fight That Closed Arden Fair Mall Early. “Police identified one of the teens arrested as 18-year-old Oscar Armendarez. A second teen was arrested, but due to him being underage the police department has not released his identity.” (And there had been a fight there two years before.)
- Memphis: MPD: No report filed on incident at Wolfchase Galleria. “Some mall employees told WREG a massive group of teenagers were getting in fights near the food court and throwing up gang signs.”
